The 60 and over Thread

This video is a bit long. At the end, Milo and his pro talks about dropping the trail foot with the driver for better rotation for seniors and then 8-W, open up the stance to rotate through the shot. Makes sense. He also suggests to start the downswing before the backswing ends, Unfortunately, this tweaks my bad trail knee.

I played yesterday in our Members League, and was a little off compared to how I played the same course on Saturday. Nothing horrible that stood out, just a few bad swings and/or bad breaks at inopportune times… it isn’t easy at my level to validate a really good round 3 days later. My back got a little stiff, and there was a lot more wind. Long story short, 42-45-87. 🤷‍♂️
I’m going to tee it up tomorrow in an 8 man money game. I need to be better or it could prove costly.

Good luck.

I’ve mentioned this privately to @SC Putter but I’m noticing my Stealth 7W is giving me 10-15 yards more than the Paradym version I struggled with. I‘m not sure whether it’s head or shaft related but the numbers don’t lie. The Stealth just works better for me.
I thought my 4H might be redundant, but it’s turned out to gap perfectly in between the 7W and 5H. The club which might have been unnecessary was the 5W. The 3HL and 7W combo has been so good I haven’t even unwrapped it yet.

Good luck. Dial it in and take the $.

I'm finally getting my distances dialed in. Been working on a repeatable swing. The loss of distance isn't so bad once I know what each club can do. My 150 yard club used to be the 7 iron a few years ago. Now its a hybrid. The 7 is now my 130 yard club. Once I felt I have the distances figured out it made it better on the course. I miss my share of greens but starting to get better with the distance.

One thing I know is how my brain works. Someone gives me a tip on the swing, and it could be good advice, but it doesn't always register for me. Like comparing the downswing to skimming rocks on a pond. Its a similar motion but it never worked for me. What works for me is the feeling of throwing my club at the target on the follow through. It ends up similar to the skimming rocks on a pond. But my brain understands throwing it at the target better. I'm more consistent with that approach.

Or moving the ball more towards the front foot to avoid hitting too fat. You would think moving it back further makes more sense since that is where the club is hitting. But that makes it worse. My brain compensates better with the ball closer to the front foot. Understanding what works and how my brain interprets things is a key for my swing.

All that came together nicely yesterday. It was a beautiful 80 degree day with a slight breeze. I played from the senior tees at 5900 yards. Ended up with a personal best 85. 8 greens in regulation is easily the best I've done in a long time. Even made a rare birdie on the first hole. I was minus one on those 8 holes. Coulda been better if I didn't find water on the final hole and ended with a triple bogey.
Everyone's swing is different. If you feel better moving the ball forward, and you aren't topping the ball, play on!!

When I try to swing hard it goes no farther than a "slow" smooth swing!

In my four season Connecticut climate I've figured out that I can use Spring gardening season to work on my swing instead of heading out to wet soggy golf course.
It helps immensely to give the plants an early start before the bugs and weeds arrive in full force!
Lot of difference between "hard" and " fast" in golf. Hard is what you need, to get out of the long rough that swallowed your ball. Fast is what you want off the tee, but yes, smooth is the key. If you try to swing like Bryson, I don't think your back is going to like it! Let the club do the work...

I find the hardest thing to do as I get older is maintain the spine angle and not lift up.

When I do lift up in the backswing I come in so steep it's almost comical when I pop up the driver 40 yards. Forget about irons it's like digging to China.

I'm flirting with adding 1/2" to irons for a more shallow attack as I naturally want to be more upright in my stance.
Thoughts?

Lots of short practice sessions. Maybe hitting into net with a target in the center so you can practice every day.

Investment in a net and hitting mat was the best thing I did for my golf game. I originally had a cheap 10x7 net from Amazon - less than $100. Last year, I upgraded to the Spornia SPG-8 so I could quit worrying about flying wedges over. And my balls no longer bounce into the pool or shrubs behind me. I still have a crappy hitting mat, but I have one of those interlocking floor mats underneath it, which gives it more cushion. Added some non-slip tape to help prevent the hitting mat from moving. I’m more of a sweeper than a digger, so I can get by with this setup.

I have a nice mat and net that I bought over the winter but I've been hitting foam balls across the yard so I can watch the ball flight.
I grow hundreds of flowering bushes so the neighbors don't mind the occasional stray ball that goes over the fences.

I had a serious pop up with the driver for a while. And I know it was because the driver was hitting down too much on impact. I couldn't keep my upper body from leaning forward on the downswing. The only thing that worked was a more close stance and turning my right shoulder as late as possible in the downswing. And moving the ball closer to my toe than instep. It did promote too much draw at times. But not so much now when I moved the ball back to where it should be. I will say trying keep the club ahead of the shoulder turn did make me swing a little faster.

I actually started doing that with the stance on the driver to avoid the dreaded pop up. But I haven't tried opening the stance on the iron. Something I might try next trip to the range.

I had that problem, went to 1 inch over standard and went to hybrids 3 thru 8.

Pretty good round on a tough course yesterday. I started double-double, then birdied #3 to get things going. I finished 43-42-85 and won just over a $100.
The highlight of my day was chipping in for bird on 14 which got me a $44 skin.

My Friday 9-hole league starts this evening!

It’s peak season down here right now, and it’s tough for a group of 40 to get tee times together, so my Saturday group is traveling tomorrow. I wanted to play in Barefoot so I’m playing with the same group I play with on Thursdays.
Whereas they play a semi cutthroat event on Thursday, it seems their Saturday game is a more relaxed atmosphere with a lot fewer players.
$20 entry, 8 man low net event with a twist. After every score is tabulated, there’s a blind draw for two man teams. Low team splits $90, 2nd splits $70.
That kind of stuff isn’t my cup of tea, but I’ve been assured there will be all kinds of side action? We shall see…

We're in that time of year where the weather is much nicer as far as temps are. 70's and 80's for a few weeks before it starts climbing into the 90's. Then 100's by mid to late June. Makes golfing enjoyable being out there. Although it does get pretty breezy at times. May can have warm days but winds in the 20's. Once July hits no wind to deal with. But man, it sure gets hot. The ball does carry better though.

Similar here, although we’re dealing with rain every other day it seems. We’ll be bone dry by July, so I guess it’s good the lakes are filling up. Golf in August is almost unbearable, with triple digits and high humidity. Fall is our best golf season and we do get the benefit of playing year round.

We are starting to get rain, guess it's a late spring. With the rain this time of year, comes nasty weather. Don't mind the rain , don't want the rest of it.

My short game has been all over the place this year. Thursday, I switched to gripping the club with a putting grip, reverse overlap, and had, I think, my best short game day ever, getting up and down 75% of the time. Many of those were tap-ins that almost went into the hole. Now, if I could only find a consistent full swing and start dropping some putts......

I play with a 3 cap who chips one armed side saddle. He’s deadly.

A much different setup can help the mind ease into the fact that you need a different swing for short game.
It is worth sacrificing distance for consistency by using the bounce and hitting the ground first.

If you can, working the ball with a partial swing may be more valuable than consistency,
as that may be the only practical way of getting the ball to stop where you want it!
If you miss a little you will basically have the long putt you would have gotten if you couldn't work the ball!
This may be the situation with sloped or tiered greens. My course has two nasty greens.
