Would you recommend moving to the area in which you currently live?

Must preface this with we are looking to avoid the extreme cold winter areas.

My wife is a nurse practitioner and I am in insurance business. We have always planned to retire somewhere warmer (currently in Syracuse, NY area). The last few years we have been discussing not waiting until retirement as both of our professions would allow for us to switch locations while still working. I also have 15 years in casino management and could go back to that field. Our youngest is 15 so it would still be a few years as we would wait until he goes to college. He often talks about going to school some where warm so we might move to be closer to him as well.

My motivation isn't necessarily to golf year round but up here it's 6 months on and 6 months off basically. My wife lived in Phoenix, AZ for 10 years and loved it. She talks about going back there but family might keep us more east. I have also heard nothing but good things about Tennessee and the Carolina's but have never been to either. My question is simply do you like where you live and why?

Thanks in advance for your input!!

I don’t think I qualify as we can still go sub-zero in the winter, but I love where I live. I can do day trips to Philly, NYC, Baltimore, DC, etc.

That said, winter stinks as we’ve been snow-covered here since just after New Years Day.

I'm about 140 miles east of you. But, like you I'm looking to leave NY and spend my retirement (or at least the winter months) somewhere other than here.

Gonna take this as a no to Michigan.
You already said you wanted to avoid extreme cold. Well it was 4* this morning and I haven't swung a golf club in over 2 months. So no I cannot recommend Michigan haha

I enjoy where we live. I get 9 months a year roughly to golf, I'm right on the ocean which is incredible in the spring/summer, there's awesome foliage in the fall, big cities and airports within driving distance, plenty of colleges & universities, you name it. Amazing golf courses all over the place.

Would I prefer to be someplace a wee bit warmer? Sure. But I enjoy having four seasons. Mostly. :ROFLMAO:

I live in Monterey. Today, it’s about 60 degrees and there’s not a cloud in the sky. I absolutely love it here. The one downside, it’s bloody ridiculously expensive. If you don’t have a decent income here, I can’t imagine it’s much fun.

Everybody has a place they call home which is beyond their control. There is almost always a link to that place which has some special place in your heart. I am currently living where I grew up and was dying to leave and left at 18. Fast forward 45 years and I'm back. And again I am itching to leave but wife's parents need some TLC so we are here for now. It's too far north for me at this stage of my life though.

I can't recommend it. I love golf and a good part of the life I have here, but I am considering moving out of the area just because at some point I would like to be able to own a home, and don't see that happening here anytime soon (Bay area if you can't see my info on the side).

So being in Central Kansas we are lucky enough to be able to golf probably 10-11 month out of the year. We do get some snow but not much (maybe 6-10" in a season) but is gone quickly. Wintertime temps get cold but not extreme. The thing here is you have to be willing to drive to get to bigger cities but worth it. For retired people it is worth it because you have no rush anyway.
Plenty of nice courses around me within 90 minute drives and would take a good 2-3 months to play them all if you wanted to adventure out that much.

I love Arizona. No place is perfect, but the things I like outnumber the things I dislike by a considerable margin.

Have been to the Hershey area several times the last few years for baseball tournaments. It is a nice area. Slightly warmer than up here.

Crap, I'm out.

When summer finally comes back we will have to meet in the middle and play a round.

Arizona is awesome. The only thing I would say is that it is not a good time to move here. Our real estate prices are insane right now. People want to blame California but there is just no inventory. If you have kids you have to really do your research on school districts. You can get a good education but it involves work from the parents.

We actually started thinking about moving out there several years ago when the boys (have 3) were little. We didn't move then as my wife was still finishing up her Master's. When we first started discussing moving again it was only Arizona for us. Just recently it has become a concern as we realize that we will probably be grandparents in the next 10-15 years (oldest is 21) and aren't sure we want to be so far if our kids stay in this area.

I’d absolutely recommend my area (Raleigh, NC region). We came from just north of NYC, Rockland County, in 2015. Now in the heart of winter, it can still sting, but frigid weather only lasts a couple months and there’s always the random warmer day thrown in there too.

Very family oriented and lots of fairs, craft fairs, and food truck rodeos beginning in the spring. In the summer, there’s numerous concerts to be found in the various towns nearby. Many walking trails and if you’re a dog family, very pet friendly throughout. Lots of interesting shopping options too from antique shops, consignment shops and the standard big box stores. But a good amount of specialty shops where that unique find is lurking. I’m not a shopper, my wife is and shes very happy with her options. But the few times I’ve tagged along, I gotta say… pretty cool stuff out there. Great healthcare too, always important.

Nope, have lived here my entire life and can't wait until I am able to make my great escape.

You had me at food truck and dog friendly!

For work, culture, education absolutely. For golf, mental health (if you have start commuting again), NO - RUN AWAY.

I myself will be in the next 8-16 months, leaving a trail if skid marks from NoVA all the way to NC (on my way to SC) going to get out of VA as fast as possible that day - can you picture a Moving Van doing a 200 mile wheelie? If you can, I'm driving.

I don't know why but I always thought Kansas was similar to us. Sounds like it's not even close. Thanks for learning me something!!
