The Home Renovation Thread

Went to the house to check things out and the gutters were done, BUT half of them had downspouts in the wrong places that I’d discussed with builder along with just some places that don’t make sense. I’m no rocket scientist but placement like shown below just doesn’t make sense, so builder not only has to have a bunch of the guttering replaced but siding where it’s screwed in has to be replaced. I was pretty po’d bc it’s just annoying bc I had discussed everything with the builder, but I guess it’s whatever. He’s fixing it on his dime.
This one I think should kick out towards field but maybe I’m wrong…

This one is supposed to be on the corner to the right where the drainage pipe is sticking out of ground. (Discussed with builder).

This one should be all the way to the right where two rooflines meet and comes down to a drainage pipe as discussed with builder. I mean running across concrete doesn’t make sense to me but what do I know.

Since cabinets and flooring are pushed to the month of May now, I went into my Lowes account and pushed delivery date of my appliances to 5/17. Ugh.

Gutters are fixed, but still have 2 pieces of siding and a piece of the black metal to be fixed on the bottom of the j-channel where they had cut it for the gutter, but builder will fix it. Other news...our french door is not black like stated. It is like a slate blue color and now has to be painted...but all of our outside doors are being painted black. I'm just ready for all this to be done.

All drywall is going up today though according to my builder.

Drywall hung. Mudding and sanding is going on as we speak. Turned in our colors for paint to the builder as well. Painting should start next week and then the hardwood flooring is going down the end of next week as well right after paint is done. I assume doors will be painted soon after. The gas lines from the plumbing side are set to be inspected, just need the gas company to come set the meter and do their part. We are a little behind now but builder was real bad sick last week and one of his crew members mother's passed, so it was a rough week for them.

Went over on my lunch to check on the house. Mudding/sanding still going on. Then went into the laundry room noticed that the dryer vent was placed too far to the right. We bought a magvent for ease of pulling dryer away from wall if there is problems or just to clean the vent tube and builder has had it for weeks. Now he has to cut drywall and have siding replaced on outside of house bc he didn’t pay attention. He’s a little annoyed but I told him I wanted it fixed.

Not really a home renovation, but looks like I get to replace my pressure tank. Need to look into if this is something I can do or need to hire out. BOOOOOOO!!!

Might as well get a new pressure switch while you’re at it.

Replaced that last summer. That one is easy at least, not clue about the tank, have never messed with those.
I typically watch a few YouTubes to see if I want to take on a task or not. Unless it’s a must do, like my leaking water heater was last year.

Sort of dumb, the lightbulb is just not going off.

I placed a new rack on the back of the door in the pantry, and of course it was quickly loaded with a lot of heavy stuff. After that, the door sticks at the top right. Not all the time, but enough. If I lift it up with handle it opens and closes easily.

So, I chiseled out from the top most hinge (door frame side only) maybe an 1/8 inch and reinstalled - I used 3 1/2 screws to hopefully get the hinge into the stud. Problem seems to not have changed at all. If I lift up on the handle all good.

So, do I remove the other 2 hinges and do the same thing, do I remove more in the routed out hinge area at the top only? I have dealt with this before but I think all I had to do was the top hinge as described above - it was maybe 12 or so years ago, maybe I just forgot.

Thanks in advance for addressing such a stupid minor thing.

Is it a solid core? Might check the hinge screws on the door side on that top hinge as well. Might need a thicker size if not SC. Also the hinge itself, may be play in it.

I always put at least one long screw in each hinge in the middle (frame side). Regardless of load or type.

Thanks, no not solid core, and I took that into consideration that side of the hinge seems fine, I removed and reinstalled it (to check) as well. I also stuffed wooden match shafts in the holes to tighten up the screws - at least a bit. But, I guess that could still be the culprit - will check that side again.

Did not consider that - the hinge itself, Isn't the trick to that to bend the part that goes into both hinges - not extreme, just slightly?

Bending the hinge pin will cause other issues. Those get worn over time (long time). Didn't think about that but worth a peek. Maybe take the hinge pin from bottom and move up top?

I can try that. They can't be worn the house is new construction of Dec 2022. So that's not it (I don't think).

Completely forgot your recent relo. Also a thought is to check the size of the hinges (thickness). Construction grade can be weak and the added weight is showing that? Especially if the door order for the build was HC.

Could also be the door itself. The internals may be flexing.

Internals flexing. Yikes! I don’t think we added that much weight.

The hinge i removed looks ok from eyeballing it. Slightly less or around 1/8th inch back could bd slightly more.

Confident they are construction grade ☹️ i don’t want to replace the door just to stock canned goods! The outer layer caught and separated i will epoxy it back together. And keep tinkering.

Many thanks for the tips!

If you know the brand of the door you can Google where the eternals are located. Still wouldn't recommend attaching canned food racks to HC doors, but could give you an idea where things are inside.

Most of the time the top and bottom are more of a would product and not just fiber. Better for attaching the rack, but still relying on glue and fiber for the door structure and solidity.

Sorry couldn't help more.

You helped a lot. Having done it at the old house, with a much bigger rack on smooth hollow door i thought this would be a cinch.
