Cobra AMP Driver Review

I've kept up with this thread, and thought I might throw in my two cents. I demoed this thing about 4 days ago, and wow is all I got. I am a pretty good tee player, and my averag for fairways hovers at around 68-70%. My current driver is a hibore xls cleveland and while I love it, the spin is way to high, and I need to make a change. Been testing some stuff (g15-20, rbz, callaway razr hawk/black), and gave the amp a go for 18 from the tips (6500, not very long) at my course to see how it stacks up.

Spec was 9.5, neutral, with a rip 55 stiff shaft. Immediately I like it more than the pings I have tried because the kick point is where I like it. Second, this is as of now the longest driver I have tried that I can control. Thing knows two moves, high and straight. Problem was too high, but thats what adjustments are for. Pretty impressed with how straight the flight is on this thing to go that high. I had to double check a few times to be sure it wasn't a 10.5 or more. Liked how efficient I was just hitting spots on fairways. Played some two ball to see if I could hit two balls in the fairway to different spots, and on several occasions succeeded. Only trick is keeping the tempo. I got progressively faster and as a result hit some bad pulls, but overall, really amazed by the thing. I think bringing the ting open 7.5 would be awesome for me, and I have never hit anything below 8 that I could control, but I am almost certain that I could with this thing.

I have a few more to try, but as of now, the Amp is really close to going in the bag.

Nice feedback there! Like you, the 9.5 at neutral was a tad high launching for me but bringing to 7.5* was not a terribly low shot which I thought it may be. I saw a more ideal launch with it set to open, sounds like that would be the route for you to try. The fact that you can get this driver new for $170 is just crazy.

Finally got mine in just in time to try it at Cottonwoods GC in Tunica,MS. We play tomorrow. Plan to have a HOTD vid as well. I will start at the neutral position of 10.5 but am thinking i will be dropping it to 8.5 pretty quickly.

Tap, tap , taparoo...

Tap, tap , taparoo...

Just keep in mind that the drop to 8.5 will also open the face a bit. I know it did not bother Hawk, but I started losing them to the right more than my liking with the open position.

Moved back to neutral today and while the launch was a bit higher, it was manageable and I was hitting more FW's.

I put this club back in the bag today and wanted to drop a little update. For all but 3 holes that I hit driver on today this thing was on. It's extremely forgiving and has been so enjoyable to hit. I was loving the sound today especially with those crisp center ball strikes. It absolutely rivals the G20 for forgiveness and I don't have the ballooning I was getting there at the end of my time with it. I don't know if you can buy a better game improvement driver for the money right now. I'm really liking the lamkin grip, even the color, and the headcover is pretty sweet.

I'm glad you like your AMP, Franco. I'm not a big fan of that headcover, but I agree that the grip isn't all that bad.

It's kind of cool, the headcover. It gives you a little peak at what's under the hood.

One of my playing partners picked one of these up and I hit it a couple of time last weekend. Both times it felt like I murdered it, but the ball was significantly behind where my normal drives are (drives were into blind spots so I couldn't watch the entire flight, only saw it take off and the ending position). I am only using an educated guess here, but I think the stock setup had too much spin for me. It had a nice launch angle, maybe a bit too high, but judging by where it ended up the ball must have dropped a lot more quickly than what I currently play.

That being said, I'd love to try a different shaft in it as the feel was nice and I actually enjoyed the look of it.

Knowing what I do about your driver needs, I would guess that you are correct. They do offer some shaft options that seem to cater more to guys looking to drop spin though.

I need to check those out. I have no real need to buy another driver but like most here I'm always interested in something.. I didn't think I'd like the AMP at all but I was pleasantly surprised by the feel. It had somewhat of a loud sound at impact but it made you feel like you really connected well on the shot. I need to see what I can find as far as lower spin shaft options go.

I'm with you on the feel. They have a 65g shaft in both S and X that Jrod seemed to like quite a bit.

Just found a 10.5* with a Graphite Design AD DI-6s... Let the pondering begin.

That's an interesting combo.

It's a lot of orange, which of course is only a bonus to me.

That's a good point! It would be like a creamsicle with that shaft.

Did not get a chance to play during my casino trip....My friend forgot to check on tourneys and they were booked solid...Oh well
Finally got a chance to try out the AMp today at the range...Not a really good test on distance as I was hitting into a 20mph breeze.
I went through all the settings and the fact that I hit a lower ball regularly, had me end up in the neutral position....(the open setting did have me leaking
While I will have to get used to the "tink" sound on impact, I was impressed by the amount of roll I got from this bad boy.....
I also liked the 55g shaft..I could feel it was lighter..(usually playing a 65g shaft)
I am going to try and play Sunday or Monday and measure out the drives....

So far though, I am liking it very much!!!!

Bama, what did you think last time you played?

Has anyone bought the offset version of this driver?

I forgot to post about this.

Last weekend at the AC Tour Van spot I hit the AMP both on the range and out of FrankA's bag on Sunday. I really think this driver head is one of the best on the market. I think Cobra made some real improvements over the S3 with it. Kmac put on a driving display using this and the Kuchar Pull swing, it was impressive at times. Hitting it against the Razr Fit, this driver feels hotter to me. On a bright and sunny day, glare off the the silver crown was not an issue. Having hit this it really makes me excited to see what Cobra has in store for us next year. Rumors are flying around the internet about their next driver and if some of it's true I think it will be on my ponder list.

This is awesome to hear Dean. One of the things I am looking forward to doing in Iowa is comparing the AMP to the s3 which i am currently gaming.

7 people have hit my amp in the last week and each one hit it extemely well. Most better than the driver they were playing at the time.

This is true.
