Watching the tournament today I noticed that the announcer explained that, on a short par 4, the player was using "less than driver".

I think, at various times, we struggle with the terms "3 wood" or "5 wood" since no modern clubs are made of wood.

Is it time to revert to the old terms for these clubs like ""Brassie, Spoon and Cleek"? We have rarely used the term "1 wood"; we call it a driver.

I think the "woods" thing is not going anywhere soon, unless of course you listen to Johnny Miller who has made it his personal thing to always say "3 metal" or 3 par.....4 par.....5 par.

I've been playing since the early 70's and while drivers often had the 1 on the club and headcover, I don't remember ever calling them a 1 wood.

Yeah I call it my "3 fairway steel and composite" to be technically accurate.

I like the nicknames given to clubs but IMO life is to short to not call it a 3 wood or fairway wood. I mean who really gives a crap other than the annoying, self-absorbed Johnny Miller?
