Yes. I wouldn't have a bowl of jelly by itself as a snack, anymore than I'd have a bowl of mayonnaise or ketchup as a snack.

Okay, I'll accept that. I just don't see grown adults eating plain jelly sandwiches, at least not outside the privacy of their kitchen

I had a friend as a kid who used to eat mayonnaise & pepper sandwiches, but it never changed my opinion that mayonnaise is a condiment.

So one could argue that the jelly was added to the bread to enhance its flavour.

FWIW - I eat jam/jelly/marmelade on toast all the time. One of my favourite breakfast items.
