Well I was lounging at home this past holiday and got a wild hair. Decided to drive to Scottsdale and have a full fitting done at Cool Clubs. I gave them a call and as luck would have it they had a Saturday morning opening, so I got some hotel reservations near TPS Scottsdale thinking I might play a little golf and headed out. It was 110 plus the whole weekend so I vetoed the golf, but still had a great time at Cool Clubs and learned a ton.
Arrived at 9 am Sat morning and was met in the parking lot and they grabbed my clubs and walked me inside. Met with my fitter Allen, and he asked a few quick questions then it was back to the bay for measuring and warm up. They grabbed my clubs one at a time and checked lie, loft, flex swingweight on all of them and charted them out. Had a little trouble with the Altitudes, they didn't fit in their measuring jigs, but we got by.
Then Allen had me warm up with my 6 Hyron while he get the software all set up. Started taking some measurements and he quickly saw that I have a serious tendency to keep my clubs delofted. After he had enough decent swings captured he grabbed some head and shaft combinations to test out. I hit several combos, and the first surprise of the day was the 2 I hit the best, the Titleist AP1 and Mizuno MP H4. The last one was really a shock to me I must say. About half way through the iron testing he told me I have the same problem he does sometimes, serious LOFT issues. I looked at him funny and he asked if I would be offended by a little off color humor. I assured him I was fine with it and he explained LOFT stands for "Lack Of F***ing Talent"! I had never heard that before, and it really got me to laughing.
Next we moved on to driver. After about 10 swings Allen said he was cancelling my driver fitting because about the only thing he thought he could do to improve on the stock reg flex Amp Cell for me was a $450 shaft, and it would be a minor improvement at best.
Next on to fairways and hybrids. Same story as irons, I need the highest launching and spinning head and shaft I can get to help offset the horrid delofting I do.
After that we went to the putter area and I was on. Didn't miss a putt the whole time he was setting up. Then he told me to really get aggressive and try to hit the back of the cup with my putts because that gives him a better picture of how the ball rolls with my stroke. I hit about 6 in a row straight to the back that bounced straight up and we were done. He only had a couple of tweaks to suggest in my putter and stroke, but overall my setup was pretty right for me.
So the bottom line was I should hit driver till I get on the green...oh wait maybe I learned the wrong thing? Seriously though, I had a great time and learned so much about the physics of golf that that alone was worth the trip. Allen was great to work with, and I think he only laughed out loud a couple of times, so he was very restrained and professional.
After all was said and done, he put together some packages with club specs etc, but no high pressure sales pitch at all. It was a very enjoyable and educational day
Here are a few pictures to enjoy:
