This might be helpful to those of you like me that have a bum set of knees. I first injured my left knee in high school many years ago and then as those of you familiar with the problem might know, began to ask my right knee to do more than God intended which had the usual consequences. I had been having some problems with my swing the last few days and was really having difficulty figuring it out. Kept going through my swing looking for the problem but I kept overlooking something that I had been doing since injuring my knees, that is protecting them.

In this case, I had been taking the weight off of my right knee by lifting the inside of my foot ever so slightly off the ground. As a result I had no way to get my hips through because I had nothing to use to get myself down and through the ball. I had gotten so frustrated that I took some practice swings purposefully exaggerating certain aspects of my swing each time in an effort to try to “feel” what was going on. I suddenly realized what I was doing and got over the ball to take some real cuts. I started hitting the ball as I had intended and kept doing so for the rest of the session.

I think this is going to be one of those things that I am going to have to think about when my swing goes awry because I could not feel my foot coming up off the ground ever so slightly. I knew I was not gettng my hips through but kept trying different ways to get my hips through to resolve the problem. Anyway I might be the only one that not only has a tendency to do this but cannot recognize it easily when it happens. However if you find yourself having trouble staying in the swing, driving down and through the ball, and have had knee problems in the past, you may also discover that you are subconsciously protecting your knee and hurting your swing.

I feel your pain brother! I had a partial knee replacement on my right knee . The left side of the the knee had to be rebuilt. I wish at the time I had went ahead with a complete knee replacement! Now my right side of my knee has fluid on it and hurts after and sometimes during playing golf. Especially when I lean on the right side and fall in to ponds and such. My orthopedic surgeon told me a year ago,,,,,, that he highly recommended a scope on the right side of the knee,,,,, to repair "floating chips' etc. and fix it. I have put it off,,, cause I have had a few other little medical issues like prostate cancer, etc.... It's getting real close to the time for me to go under the knife again on that knee.... My hips are starting to feel the stress trying to protect that knee. I am going to hold off until after our Setember Florida outing. All those years of playing ball and jumping around on the ground like a June Bug is starting to take it's affects. It's hell to get old huh ??????

Getting old is not for the faint of heart, the irony is: when you're young you have the body, but not the time, when you're old , have the time, but not the body,,,,,,

On top of that, all of those injuries we got in high school and college that were “fixed” come back with a vengeance. Not sure which ended up worse, the malady or the cure.

I am raising up out of my shots now and I used to have a very solid iron game. I am getting away with the driver, I suppose because it's a longer stick? Anyway we only played nine holes today and my knee is needing ice for the swelling. I may go ahead and see if my surgeon can scope it and hope it get's well in a couple of weeks????

Major news announcement from the little town of "Gray Georgia"! Old Gray played golf today and had some very serious pain in the right side of my right knee. Fell off a few shots that sloped up hill and sideways with some what agony. I can not put it off any longer. I have put this surgery off for two years and I have an appointment in the a.m.,,,, with Dr Stapleton at an Othropedic clinic in Macon,,, to set a date for the scope. I am hoping no ligament damage just loose chips/fragments that he can clean up and reduce the fluid so I can balance myself again. As most of you know balance is a key ingrediant in a solid golf striking day.

It hurt my feelings because the night before,,,,,,, I was offered a free round of golf at Ashville Country club in North Carolina!!!!! I was all stoved up to go,, until my knee blew out today more than once! I have an appointment at 08:00 a.m. with my surgeon to set up my surgery date. I want to get this fricking knee fixed and healthy before heading to West Palm Beach!!!! I don't expect to be Kelly's caddy. Damn it,,,,,, I want to play that beautiful coase!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Bridges! I am a quick healer so I expect full recovery if "I behave myself". Kellybo knows I press forward with the healing process as I was walking aroung the block for a mile two days at my prostate cancer surgery. Not to mention I had a catheter hooked to my leg. Hell the nurse said walking was a good thing so I took her at her word )........KellyBo came aroung the block, caught me, and chewed my arse out for slipping out of the house for exercise so soon after surgery. Heck,,, I was ready to play golf again asap.....

Interesting post. Might very well have that problem, at least to some extent.

20 years of elite level volleyball really messed up my knees. Can't do any sports that involve jumping anymore. Also dislocated my right knee during a soccer game at one point, and now I have to beware of putting too much horizontal force on it or it'll pop right out again. Happened only once while golfing though. Was at home in front of a mirror while trying some of the Hogan power drills, and I tried really putting some force on my right leg in the downswing. Half a second later I was laying on the floor screaming. No more power drills for me. :excruciating:

Guess that means there's a reason I'm protecting my knee. I'll try keep it in mind next time on the range however.

I have my scope scheduled for this Monday!!! I am ready to get this past me and looking forward to Florida!!!

Thanks good buddy,
Old Gray

I had a similar problem with my shoulder. I dislocated my left shoulder a few times, so I learned to protect it. On my backswing I would dip my left shoulder down to get some rotation. This move created a long list of other problems that took me awhile to un-learn.

Good news is though, as soon as a found out what was wrong, I started making real progress. With some practice and lots of patience I am on my way back to a good swing!

Injuries in any sport can prohibit you from playing to your optimum.... I have no doubt when my knee is fixed my balance will improve 100 percent ! I am not saying my golf game will automatically blossum to my expectations but having a steady body helps, except when you have had too many Miller Lites ).........

I had some bad news today. My knee surgery was scheduled for Monday. The preopt nurse called today and said an EKG that I had about two months ago due to stroke like symptoms showed up a problem. I was told at the ER that everything came back normal. Now they will not do surgery until a heart doctor looks at the EKG and oks the knee op... So now I have to go to my family doctor Monday and request a copy of the EKG from the hospital and see a cardiologist to clear me for surgery. I was excited about and getting ready for my knee surgery and then this happens.

Thanks buddy. I am a bit depressed about this, however it may be a blessing in disguise. If this puts off my knee surgery too long, I will reschedule the knee surgery after our September trip. I am not going to let it ruin our vacation. Hopefully it is something very minor and the heart doc can verify all is well and then I can get the knee fixed next week. You know how it is getting in to see a specialist. Maybe my family doc can speed up the process.

I turn 40 Friday, and sure enough, I'm falling apart!
The outside of my left knee started to cause me some pain last season. I used to be able to get through walking a round with doses of Advil, but I'm afraid I'm beyond that. Now, my knee is never 100%. I didn't want to have to get cut at the start of the season, but my knee feels differently. I'm not happy.
Good thing I have insurance I guess...
