This might be helpful to those of you like me that have a bum set of knees. I first injured my left knee in high school many years ago and then as those of you familiar with the problem might know, began to ask my right knee to do more than God intended which had the usual consequences. I had been having some problems with my swing the last few days and was really having difficulty figuring it out. Kept going through my swing looking for the problem but I kept overlooking something that I had been doing since injuring my knees, that is protecting them.
In this case, I had been taking the weight off of my right knee by lifting the inside of my foot ever so slightly off the ground. As a result I had no way to get my hips through because I had nothing to use to get myself down and through the ball. I had gotten so frustrated that I took some practice swings purposefully exaggerating certain aspects of my swing each time in an effort to try to “feel” what was going on. I suddenly realized what I was doing and got over the ball to take some real cuts. I started hitting the ball as I had intended and kept doing so for the rest of the session.
I think this is going to be one of those things that I am going to have to think about when my swing goes awry because I could not feel my foot coming up off the ground ever so slightly. I knew I was not gettng my hips through but kept trying different ways to get my hips through to resolve the problem. Anyway I might be the only one that not only has a tendency to do this but cannot recognize it easily when it happens. However if you find yourself having trouble staying in the swing, driving down and through the ball, and have had knee problems in the past, you may also discover that you are subconsciously protecting your knee and hurting your swing.
