THP: The Magazine Spring Issue Sneak Peek

Re: THP: The Magazine Spring Issue Sneak Peek

How do I get the mag?

Love the feedback guys and input on the cover. We always like hearing about what everybody likes and dislikes. We spoke about it last night and decided we are going to keep this cover as is for this issue.

We really like how it came out and while it is not what some are looking for, most seem to like it quite a bit. But we are taking each one of your ideas and making notes about them for future issues.

I personally absolutely love love the cover!!! It looks very clean and not crowded with info. I hate to disagree with you JL, but the white background looks very cool. It gives it depth. Love the camo and crosshairs for the driver shootout, very very clever. And finally, I agree with smalls and tcalloway, you were kind of going for thr "for dummies" look without duplicating and I think it was a great idea and concept. Overall, an excellent job and I am looking forward to it.

Not talking about the background, sorry. I was referring to the empty space above his left shoulder.
I'm sure all these things I'm saying aren't a big deal at all to your consumers. I just notice them because that's what I do.

I think white space (empty space) can be a very good thing. Putting something everywhere makes things very busy, and that's not a good thing either. I understand where you're coming from JL, I was in the business over 20 years so I notice the small things too!

I agree white space is very important. It's even nicer when everything is spaced evenly.

I'd rather have something...here.......here.......here

than.................................here..here..........here

We forwarded all suggestions to our designer and here are some of his thoughts.

It's really interesting reading the feedback for the cover. I'm lovin it.
If you want my 2 cents as to why it is designed the way it is:

1. The title - to put the name all the way across the page is too
typical. It was designed that way to be more modern. Various
magazines have left justified (GQ), centered (Sports Illustrated) or
right justified (can't think of example right now).

2. Furyk image - to have him smaller really effects the overall
composition. He definitely needs to overlap the "HACKERS" for depth
and effect. If he was lower, he would look too "sized".

3. Space - by having "negative space" above the right shoulder, him
slightly on the right side, titles and text on the left it creates a
non-symmetrical balance. With titles on both sides, "HACKERS" all the
way across, etc. it would be too perfect and visually boring.

4. Titles - personally I'm not a big fan of titles period. I would
rather see nothing but "HACKERS" and an image to make it feel more like
art. A new issue of Mens Health isn't going to hook me because of
their ongoing Abs, Diet, Sex Life, and 15 min. workout titles... it's
too repetitive. You want this magazine because it's "The Hackers
Paradise" and you KNOW it's full of good content.

5. Focal Point - what is the first thing you look at? His eyes. Then
"Hackers", then the titles... a challenge any designer faces is what to
have the viewer look at first... it's what makes great art. Then you
need to map out what you want them to see next and following. If you
jump all around, you've lost them.

Note: That picture includes a 1/4" bleed all the way around - so the
distance between the titles, "18", etc. and the edge is actually cut in
half.

I like what I saw! All very nice and original looking...

... Some of the text looked a bit small, but that was caused by my desire to read it! I am sure it will be just fine when printed full size in the magazine.

Such a tease  I can't wait until this comes out and I can get my hands on one of these :clapp:

Awesome stuff...can't wait to get the subscription info!
