The Official Tiger Woods Thread

How on Earth will they ever survive without him going to work to bring home the bacon???? Can he draw unemployment?

*intended to drip with sarcasm*

HA HA!

You know what else i heard today is that a lot of the people are backing out of The Cliffs at High Carolina. The developer says that they are going to move forward as planned with Tiger but I know the folks in their marketing agency well and a lot of them are looking for employment elsewhere (that tells me plenty)

OMG TIGER IS TAKING A BREAK FROM GOLF!

INDEFINITELY!

According to his website...

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

OMG... he sounds like Brett Favre!

of course he is. Did anyone think he wouldn't?

Threads merged, since this was basically the same post as the previous thread and the fact there is a new developement every hour the posts have been moved.

Then he should be back in about six weeks. He'll probably want the PGA Tour to give him his release so he can play on the European Tour, but instead they'll trade him to the Asian Tour where he'll play for a season. Then he can go to the European Tour where he'll have a good season before folding down the stretch.

But if that is the case, he would come back and beat us in the Ryder Cup ala Favre owning the Packers this year....hehe. Just kidding.

He won the first two rounds, hopefully there's a sudden death third.

Now back to TIGER WOODS.

I bet Finchem gave a sigh of relief when he heard about Tiger's latest move. I read on another forum that a poster thought he will be back before he loses his #1 ranking, or before the next major is played.

Just speculation on my part, but do you suppose he might think about breaking away from Steve Williams? I know one of the analyst on the GC said something to the effect that he might have to break some personal ties to get a completely new, fresh start when he does return. Like I said, just speculation on my part.

In a lot of ways, I am relieved that he won't be around at the start of the new season. I think his personal troubles would have totally overshadowed anything happening on the course. Until the aftermath of his poor choices have died away like ripples in a pond, staying away from the spectacle of pro sports is probably a great idea for him, the tour and his family.

So Elin isn't leaving him after all, eh?? Hmmm.....

I hope they get everything worked out in their personal lives and whether he returns to golf or not that is the most important thing. Golf will go on without him just like it did when he was out last year and before he was around, so it may have an immediate impact, but there are too many good players coming up that will offer the same level of excitement. I can't wait to watch Fowler, Kim and Rory duking it out next year.

Online gaming sites are taking bets (3:1 odds) that say Elin will file for divorce before the end the year...hmmmmm......

Personally I think this is an effort to shift the topics of discussion...
Right now everyone is talking about when is Tiger coming back? Can the PGA survive without him?
Instead of talking about his "transgressions" and "infidelity"...
First good PR move so far...

Thats good as I got sick of all the crap on TV about this. For me the only reason I participated in this was it was pretty clear there was so much BS being thrown around it was hilarious. And I don't even know the guy, his wife, etc. But stories didn't add up, women coming out of the woodwork, BS stories about the crash, etc. It didn't take Capt. Obvious to put 2 and 2 together and crack this case wide open, well for most anyways.

I have never not been a Tiger fan, I just don't like how the media treats the others who are on tour with him. I get so sick of hearing about Tiger, this and that and I think they totally disrespect the other players in their lack of coverage of them. Even when Tiger isn't in a tournament it continues and I am sure it will be like that forever while he is alive and competitive, but at some point you would think it has to stop. So maybe this will be that point, or there will be asterisks next to each of the next major winners who win when Tiger is on his leave of absence. As I am sure because 3 of 4 majors this year are at courses that Tiger dominates that if Tiger isn't in the field all the media will talk about how if Tiger were there it would have been a different story, etc.

I feel the same way V, but that's because we (and other people on golf forums) aren't just casual golf fans. The casual fan knows Tiger, and wants to hear about Tiger. The casual fan is how the networks pay their bills. And sometimes we obsessed golfers forget that very few people's lives revolve around golf the way our lives do. We seek out and surround ourselves with the sport. But we are a very small minority.

So is the oversaturation of Tiger on TV annoying to us? Absolutely. But even the other players who are being disrespected probably don't mind that much since the Tiger effect has trickled down and filled their pockets quite nicely. (I'm hoping Michelle Wie does the same for the LPGA.)

I was never a huge Tiger fan, but I respected him. And he always made Sundays exciting, because no matter who was ahead of him and by how far, he could make a run and potentially win.

But now, I'm a little grossed out when I see him. I doubt that I would have felt that way if it had been only one woman, but drugs and porn stars? Gross.

I also never liked how terse he was with the fans. Phil Mickelson always made time. Arnold Palmer always made time. I could even understand if he shunned the adults . . . but he didn't even take time with kids. I tried to rationalize it as "too many demands on his time," but now I just think he is selfish. Very, very, selfish. And so I hope Mickelson whips him every chance he gets. Go Phil.

Hi Harry,

I may be completely wrong about this, but I always thought Tiger actually spent a lot of time helping the kids out with his Foundation and behind the scenes. I think he always just viewed the golf course as his office and that was the time for work, not autographs and the like. I've also heard nothing but good things about the way he treats the young guys on tour. Sure on the golf course, he's all about beating them, but he helps them out and encourages them in the locker rooms and away from the press. I think, but again I don't know, that Phil is the opposite of that. He is all smiles and laughter on the course, but he can't have got his FIGJAM nickname from nowhere.

Harry you hit the nail right on the head. Without Tiger Woods, this tour would not be near where it is and these players can thank about half of their yearly earnings to him. Right or wrong, the statistics do not lie. When he plays, the ratings are close to double what they are when he does not. Buck Live was great on HBO and the last 5 minutes had a segment about it. Well said and as usual a great delivery.

I heard a sports talking head who already said as much. That if Tiger misses a major, while healthy enough to play, then should an "asterisk" be used for that tournament, which I thought was a pretty lame piece of sports journalism on his part. He was commenting specifically on Pebble Beach, and where ever the Open Championship is being played this year.

If he's still out come "Masters" tournament time, I will be some what surprised. :D

I bet he doesn't play in 2010. I think that would be a smart move.

No doubt Tiger poured money in his Foundation, and that is admirable. But I've never seen him do anything but scowl as he walked past the throngs of his child fans. Phil and Arnie stand there signing autographs for hours. When you are as rich as Tiger, it's easy to give money and make an occasional appearance. It's hard to stand around for hours after a bad round.

As for FIGJAM, I've been looking into that for a couple of years now. I'll even admit that I was sucked into believing it for a while. But here's the thing, I can't find a single person who can give a single example of it. I don't know how or why it got started, but I've never seen evidence of it. I've only seen evidence of class from Phil and everyone around him.

On the other hand, look at what we've recently learned about Tiger. And what we've always known about his caddie. Is it any wonder they get along so well?

My personal feeling is that Phil is more than just a little goofy. And he likes to talk - maybe even out of his arse occasionally. But I've never seen any malice. He seems to like trivia and absurdly mundane facts, and he likes to talk about them. And I can see where that might irritate some people. So maybe that's how he got the nickname. But, to me now, Tiger just seems mean.

Harry,
While Tiger is like that, my personal encounters with Jack were always like that. He was rude to the fans while at some tournies unless he won and then was gracious. Arnie and some others I believe are more the exception unfortunately.

As for his foundation, he is actually quite hands on and it is more than just the money.

None of it excuses his actions or anything like that.

Agreed. I wasn't trying to make excuses for him. I don't think he needs excusing. Not to me or to us anyway. His family yes, very much so, but that's not my business. I personally just hope that they can get this behind them asap so I can get back to watching him do what he's best at.

I always felt about Jack the way I felt about Tiger (pre-hoedown). Respected, but didn't always like. I preferred Crenshaw, Palmer, Watson, and Kite.
