Pinnacle is a private club that I belong to about 15 minutes from my house. It has a somewhat laid back atmosphere. The course is characterized by rolling hills, elevated greens, trees, lots of uneven lies, and somewhat difficult greens. They've done some pretty major renovations in the last two years, which included building three new holes. Played what will probably be my last normal conditions rounds of the year today. Greens get punched tomorrow and Fall is going to be taking hold soon I'm sure.

I have a love/hate thing with the course. It's been challenging enough to make me learn a little course management finally, but sometimes I just wish it was a little more friendly to my game. Regardless, it's usually in very good condition. The front was built first and features a pretty old-school set up with back to front sloping greens. You see a little more variety in the greens on the back nine.

Practice area is great. Service is ok. For the price, it's a pretty good deal as far as private clubs go. Still a bit more than I'd like to spend at this point in my life, so I'll be playing elsewhere next year. It's been fun while it lasted.

There are five sets of tees and each play to a par 72.

Red - 5,149
Gold - 5,485
White - 6,146
Blue - 6,470
Black - 6,870

Took a bunch of pictures today, so let's get started. Sorry, but the lighting wasn’t always great and I didn’t bring out the good camera. I'm going to give distances from the blue tees in descriptions.

Hole 1 - Par 5 - 585 Yards

Pretty forgiving fairway to start off with. This hole plays downhill quite a ways, so a good tee shot is rewarded. Regardless, it plays as a three shot hole for pretty much everybody. There is a fairway large bunker complex to catch the short-right tee shots and a stand of trees on the left. Green is fairly large and slopes back to front. Bunkers on both sides of the green.

Hole 2 - Par 3 - 157 Yards

This is a nice little par three that can give up a birdie or leave you trying to avoid double. Water is in play in front of the green, as well as for misses left. Misses right can force a lower shot due to trees. Medium size green that gently slopes back to front.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - 313 Yards

This one isn't long, but plays uphill the entire way and can be very challenging if you don't hit a good tee shot. A good tee shot will leave you 100 yards or less to a deep, but narrow green that slopes severely back to front. Being above the hole is a great way to set up a three putt.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - 352 Yards

This is a pretty straightforward par 4, but seems to cause me a lot trouble for some reason. You can tee it up with a hybrid/fairway wood to stay level with the green for a 150 yard approach, or a driver will leave you around 100 yards from well below the green. There's enough trouble to force a fairly straight tee shot. Green slopes very hard left back to right front. Front pins are very tough and it's not uncommon to putt the ball off the green.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - 291 Yards

I love this hole. Tee box is slightly elevated. Off the tee, you can try to drive the green or can hit an iron/hybrid to set up a short wedge to the green. Misses to the right off the tee will have a pretty large stand of trees to deal with, making a GIR mostly impossible. This is one of the the three hardest greens on the course, depending on the pin placement. It slopes very hard back to front, plus there is a ridge towards the front/center that funnels balls left or right, depending on which side you are on. Front pins are the hardest and it's not uncommon to see a ball from the fairway hit the green and roll back down to the fringe.

Not sure where the pin was today?

Hole 6 - Par 4 - 420 Yards
Long hole, but a good tee shot shortens it up quite a bit. The key is to get over the crest of the hill, about a carry of 220 yards, which will funnel the ball down and right to around the 150 mark. Misses left or right off the tee are in the trees or possibly a pair of water hazards. Pond to the right is in play, as are bunkers on both sides of the green. Green slopes back to front and there is a back tier that makes for a tough pin. This is a tough hole for me.

Hole 7 - Par 5 - 507 Yards

Not really a long hole yardage wise, but it plays uphill after the tee shot. Misses to the right off the tee mean a punch out almost every time. The last third of the fairway slopes hard from right to left, so the ball is almost always above your feet on the approach shot. Take an extra club on the approach and do everything you can to be on the right tier of this very deep, back to front sloping green. Being on the wrong tier brings a three putt into play.

Hole 8 - Par 3 - 199 Yards

The green is among the larger on the course, which is nice due to the length. This hole plays into the wind most of the time. There is a pond way right and I've seen balls find it. Misses short right usually get caught up in the grass bunkers. Missing left leaves you well below the green. Green slopes back right to front left, but isn't very difficult.

20120930082844-L.jpg

Hole 9 - Par 4 - 353 Yards

Another one that plays longer than it's listed yardage due to an uphill slope. Unless you bomb it, you are going to have an uphill, 150-175 yard approach to the toughest green on the property. The long hitters can get over the crest of the first hill, which makes the hole much easier. Tee balls into the hill generally roll back down a ways. Approach shot is normally blind for all but the long hitters. Missing right is not a good thing as the land drops off down a hill. Green moves hard from back left to front right. Everything moves to the right, whether it looks that way or not. Balls will roll off the green if you are above the hole and aren't careful.

Back Nine

The back is flatter than the front and typically plays a little easier. There are three holes that were built in the last two years.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 366 Yards

Not as difficult as it looks off the tee, but a crooked tee shot can get you in trouble. Misses left will end up in the hazard and short-right misses can end up in the trees. If you have a little juice on your right miss, you'll find plenty of room past the trees. The green is surrounded by bunkers, but isn't severely sloped. As a rule, the greens on the back are a little faster because they are exposed more to the wind.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - 492 Yards
Short par five, but is a three shot hole for most people due to the pond that sits directly in front of the green and forces a long carry. This hole is almost always playing into the wind. Typically a lay up to about 100 yards will keep you out of the water and give you a good look at the green. The green is very shallow back to front and slopes left to right and towards the water. This is another quick green, but if you set yourself up with a good tee shot you should have a good chance at a birdie putt.

Didn't take a picture of the tee shot for some reason.

Hole 12 - Par 3 - 193 Yards
Wind, length, and a narrow green make this the hardest par three on the course. The green is new and very firm and it's a tough one to hold. The back portion of the green drops off. A little pot bunker sits short right. If you're going to miss, short right isn't a bad place to be since there is a bailout area. Left is a hazard and you may or may not find your ball. Fun hole.

Hole 13 - Par 4 - 375

Plays very slightly uphill. The tee shot is pretty forgiving as long as you don't go right. There are some grass humps that will catch drives on the right side of the fairway that don't carry 225+. Green is large and has a big false front. Front pins are hardest. Not a terribly difficult hole.

20120930093629-L.jpg

Hole 14 - Par 4 - 415 Yards

Long hole that normally plays into the wind. That's really the only thing that makes the hole difficult. Fairway is wide and you have to really miss to not have a shot. Green is undulating and fairly large. A poor tee shot usually makes this a three-shot hole for me.

20120930094531-L.jpg

Hole 15 - Par 3 - 142 Yards

My favorite par three on the course, though the green is a little tricky. Mainly I like it because it's short. There is a bunker complex front right and another one to the left side. You really should never be in the front bunker, but I've been there a number of times. Green is undulating and can leave some difficult birdie putts. Overall, this is a hole I really like.

20120930095636-L.jpg

Hole 16 - Par 4 - 377 Yards

Straight away tee shot. Misses right can end up in a hazard over the levee. Water left of the green is in play. Green is pretty flat, but slopes away from the water for some reason. A good tee shot leaves a good chance at a decent score here.

20120930100949-L.jpg

Hole 17 - Par 4 - 383 Yards

Hard dogleg right with an approach to an elevated green. Longer hitters can try to carry the right fairway bunkers for a short approach, or a hybrid down the middle will leave 130-140 yards uphill. The right fairway bunker will make it a three shot hole due to blocking trees. Missing far right can make for an interesting hole. The elevated green is steep from front to back and is surrounded on both sides by bunkers. Fun hole if you get a decent tee shot out there.

20120930101117-L.jpg

20120930101603-L.jpg

Hole 18 - Par 5 - 550 Yards

Newest hole on the course and it's far more difficult than the easy par 4 it replaced. Plays uphill the entire way. Tee shot is pretty forgiving as long as you aren't way offline. Approach requires a fairway wood or hybrid to an ever narrowing fairway. Any misses to the right here will go down the hill. The approach is to a large, oddly shaped green. You can bounce the ball off the hill to the left to bail out. Missing right is not good and could result in a blind pitch to a green that is far above the ball. Much like the majority of the hole, the green itself needs to mature. It mostly breaks down towards the right, but has some ridges. This hole requires three good shots. Finishes right under the porch off the clubhouse.

I like this course. The greens are wicked.

Great write up Hawk! Sorry I couldn't be there today =(

Good looking stuff there.

You really have to be able to carry 250 minimum to get it up the hill, which I can't do. That always leave a long, uphill shot that destroys anybody who hits a lazy fade. Just a bad set up for my game.

Awesome looking course and a great write up Hawk !

Thanks guys. Wish I would have brought out the good camera, but I was hoofing it. It's a pretty course in the fall with all the maples.

Good stuff Hawk. Few issues with the pics here on my end but from what I saw it looks great. Setting up for a 3 putt sounds like a fun green lol.

Nice foilage as well.

Great write up Hawk. The course looks really good with some fun looking holes.

that sounds aweful, I would probably end up in the water, or I'd just purposely hit into the adjacent fairway if there is one and play from there haha

I've been in that water ugh. Not many times, but it's happened. I actually find the fairway quite a bit, because a miss right will sometimes roll down the hill on the right. It's just a tough approach from down there since it's long and blind. I've even punched a three wood from down there just to keep the ball in play when I was fighting my swing. If I can get off the front with a score lower than 45 I'm usually happy. My lowest is 43 I think and lowest on the back is a 40.

Great write up hawk, I love this course. That first hole is a stunner anytime, but really special with the turning leaves.

The fronts not my favorite to walk, lol.

That's crazy, I'd take 43 any day though especially on that course, it looks tough

Hawk, amazing man, looks like a fun but challenging track to play on a regular basis. This has inspired me to do my own course for sure. I love the fact you were out early with the dew, tracks and fog!!! Nicely done.

Gotta love some early morning golf. Sun was rising on one side and the moon was still out as I drove up.

That's a nice looking home course. Looks like I need to go and checkout some Eastern IA courses.

Great writeup dude. I wish I could come up and play this man, I love the trees changing, really makes for a beautiful scene

Thanks all. I think I'm going to try to get out there in a little while to see what the damage is after aeration.
